China - Shanghai

6/26 - 6/27: Shanghai

6/26

On the train platform. Kevin walks into a pole.
On the train. Someone is snoring in the opposite aisle.

Building renovation (in preparation for expo) known as "wear clothes put on hat".

In Shanghai:

Super intense crossing guard. Renovated Bund for Expo.

Walked to the Chenghuang Miao area.

Lunch nearby: large long bao with straws. Retain heat very well!

Went to Yuyuan garden afterwards:

Went to look for the "bird and flower market". Google sent us here:
which did not have any birds or flowers, just spray-painted cacti:

An old lady gave us directions to a street that sold anime and kittens. Close enough?

Tossing mice. Giant white rabbit. Laundry lines on the sidewalk people just hanging out.

Took the subway back to downtown, visited the Shanghai city planning expo. Giant model of the city. Learned all about the Yangshan deep-water port.

Had Real Kung Fu for dinner, in Oriental Pearl mall. Two kids holding hands walking in mall, one decides to change direction and both fall. Oh no!

Saw an airplane-themed restaurant in the mall. Did not think that the in-flight dining experience was so sought-after.

People wearing frames without lenses

Booth selling real estate in the mall

Subway. In general, in Nanjing too, lots of environmental protection ads. Girl had plastic bag that said 'turn out the lights' and subway tv also had protect the environment ads. But people still litter. I guess it's not the same idea.

6/27

Left hotel at 6:40. Got to Longyang station around 6:10. Onto Maglev at 6:30. Yay!
Arrived 6:38. Bumpier and louder (whining sound) than expected. Travels on an elevated flat concrete slab. What if something is on it, like a pigeon? Need a cow scoop.

Huge line at Delta check-in counter. Wrapped around block. Very helpful pregnant woman. Took us to self-check-in and navigated the menus in Japanese (spoke excellent Chinese and English) then stole our passports! We just gave then to her because she wad so polite.

At immigration now. 8:10. SC hopes she can exit using HK residence card.

Out of security around 8:20. Walked to gate, 8:30. Still 1:45 until departure. Nobody at gate.

Everyone who goes thru the security gate beeps. Then they do the wand, but didn't catch SC's kangaroo card pouch. It's like the subway security in Beijing. Maybe a less of a joke than that but still not like airports in the US.

Huangpu airport looks like the HK international airport. Blue banners with letters at check in. Gate area also looks like HK, only difference is different colored seats and free water dispensers.

Short cat movie called Nekoban on plane
